Dear Dauphin Island Property Owner,

The Dauphin Island Restoration Task Force is a group committed to stabilizing, restoring and preserving Alabama's only coastal barrier island for environmental, recreational and residential uses.  We seek long-term solutions to protect the entire island, but also near-term solutions to assist areas in crisis such as the rapidly-eroding West End Gulf-side shoreline.

Below are updates of the Task Force's recent activities and accomplishments.

Yesterday’s power outage – the power company ran late restoring power to the island L. Originally the outage was to last from 7am to 12pm, then got changed on Sat to 7 - 3, by Sun evening it switched to 8am to 4 pm.  They had equipment problems and it was off yesterday until 5:30. As you can image the renters were starting to get a little touchy and were happy it was on before full dark.  We had a power’s out breakfast for the renters at the office yesterday with krispy kreme doughnuts and used the generator to make them hot coffee.  The repairs are to replace lines in the bay and change wooden poles in certain areas with concrete poles.  We have been told to expect another scheduled outage or two, but the power company has not set those dates or times yet.

Town Crier – December issue is attached and has the Mardi Gras parade dates listed.  Keep in mind if you plan to come, the first parade on Jan 16th is the larger of the two.

Happy Thanksgiving! - We would like to wish all of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.  Our office will be closed on Thanksgiving and the Friday following Thanksgiving.  On both days we do have a few check-ins, check-outs, etc  and we will be in and out of the office attending to everyone’s needs, (so please call our cell numbers or leave us a message if you need  anything at all), but we will not have formal business hours on those days.  We will be back at our desks Saturday 9am – 4pm.  If you are one of the many homeowners who will be spending the holiday on the Island, please note that Ship and Shore will be closing early Wed at 7pm and will be open Thanksgiving day from 6am to noon

Hurricane Run September 12th. Hurricane Run 5K to be held on Dauphin Island September 12th. This race has been conducted the second Saturday of September every year since 1982, partly in response to the destruction of Hurricane Frederic in 1979. This year the race falls on the exact 30th anniversary of Frederic. Proceeds from this race go to the Dauphin Island Fire and Rescue Unit. The Kids Run is a new addition to the Hurricane Run this year. It is also the first Port City Pacers kids/fun run in which we will give awards (trophies and medallions) to children 12 and under who participate in the event. The Kids Run will be approximately 1/2 mile in distance and will have a separate start time and start/finish line from the 5K. This allows parents to run with their children after completing the 5K. The kids awards will be for top 3 boy and girl overall and top three boy and girl in 4 age divisions. All children will receive a participation ribbon at the finish. Please review the Kids Run flyer for all the other "fun stuff" that is planned for the children.

Teens charged in Dauphin Island fire

Three teenagers were arrested Tuesday night on Dauphin Island, charged with arson in connection with a blaze that destroyed two empty U.S. Coast Guard buildings, police said.

A 13-year-old male, 14-year-old female and 15-year-old female were arrested and taken to Strickland Youth Center, said Dauphin Island Police Chief George Goodwin.

Goodwin said the teens do not live on Dauphin Island.

The fire started about 8 p.m., destroying two Coast Guard cottages that had been unused since Hurricane Katrina damaged them in 2005, said Chief Brad Cox of the Dauphin Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

It took about three hours to extinguish the fire with help from firefighters from Alabama Port and Bayou La Batre, Cox said   IMW note...... those where my quotes.

The proposed west end berm (formerly referred to as the levee) project that would have involved building a berm beside the bike trail on the south side of Bienville, was voted on at tonight’s Town council meeting. After discussion (during which no council member seemed to support the idea as it was), the following motion was proposed and passed by unanimous vote as the Towns response to FEMA/EMA “We do not accept the berm project as proposed but are interested in other options.”   The council felt it was important to respond to the proposal professionally and to put together a response  that will share the concerns the community and Town had about the project – namely issues of access, use, cost of installation and maintenance of service road, public safety, utilities, insurance, etc and to have that response be documented so that in the future they are able to show the government officials they deal with while the idea was seriously considered and found unacceptable due to very legitimate problems with the plan; the Town is open to ideas and suggestions.

More rain on the way to southwest Alabama ? ready or not
More rainfall is expected today, which forecasters say will further batter areas around Mobile and Baldwin counties that were drenched over the weekend by a series of powerful storms. The wet weather closed roads, flooded homes and caused numerous sewer spills.
From Beth, Last weeks heavy rainfall on Wed, Thurs & Fri combined with high surf and a south wind to cause coastal flooding, especially bad Fri/Sat.  Saturday am Bienville Blvd was flooded from St Andrews Ct west with the areas around St Denis Ct & Sehoy being deepest.  In several areas surf washed from south (gulf) side of Island to the north side of Bienville.  Things were trying to dry on Sunday & yesterday, however today we are under another coastal flood watch, with another one expected on Thursday. Below are some pictures taken Saturday around noon.  Those of you with structural damages have already been contacted, however driveway damages are a bit murkier – several will need to be scraped or in some cases rock will need to be added.  A few of the side streets will need to have sand scraped  off before cars can get to your driveways. Once tonight’s weather passes we’ll see if any new flooding has occurred and will  have a better idea what is needed in terms of driveway repair.  Some pictures are up at http://www.boardwalk-realty.com/houses/Damaged%20houses/59.htm

West end flooding –This week (April 26-28) we are experiencing flooding on the west end.  There is no rainfall, no storm systems; just a strong south wind.  It is pushing the waves right up onto the lots south of Bienville and is crossing Bienville in a few places.  The picture below was taken this morning around Sehoy.  The winds are from the south east blowing 15-25 knots this afternoon, and are forecast to be south east 10-15 knots tomorrow.  There will most likely be new problems with side streets and driveway issues.  Will let you know how things look tomorrow.
